This is going to be a long post! read and scroll, I promise you’re going to love it! :).
Professional stylists can site you chapter and verse about body types, silhouettes, necklines, fabrics. But even the rules and guidelines that work can become overwhelming, especially to those not schooled in the laws of fashion.
Take hearts: Dressing your body to perfection isn’t a mystery process. It’s simply a game of proportion. You use lines and light to accentuate the thing you want to play up. Don’t fret about the less-than-perfect aspects of your body. They will naturally recede.
Wear halter gown and direct everyone’s eyes to your beautiful shoulders and not to your ample hips.
A shorter bride can wear a dress with princes lines and vertical seaming to elongate her silhouette.
Here, in a nutshell, is all you need to know about lines.
A horizontal line will make you look wider at the point where it hits. A vertical line elongates. Diagonals cut the width and move the eye to another part of you body. That’s why a V-neck is so slimming. It’s that simple.
Most women– and that would be 99.9999 percent of us—- want to appear taller and thinner, so look for lines and proportions that get you to that goal. If your body isn’t that evenly proportioned, and that would describe 99.9999 of us— compensate! Someone with short legs can elongate her lower half by choosing an empire or the natural waist gown. Conversely, a woman with a short waist can balance her shape by choosing a drop waist gown. It works for some but not for everyone.
If this is all new to you, educate yourself by looking at photos of wedding dresses in bridal magazines or on web-sites. Figure out where your eye goes first, then see how the lines of the dress direct you there. Once you’ve got these basics down, you can generalize the rules to find the dress that will flatter your shape. By the way, while you’re looking at photos, rip out images that say something to you. either positive or negative. write down what you do or don’t like about each gown ( “love the bateau neckline/hate the appliqué on the hip”), and bring your clippings with you when you go shopping. They will help the sales associate direct you to the gown with your name on it.
